Boxing Day Bonanza at Royal Tay Yacht Club

There were plenty of thrills and some spills for the hardy sailors taking part in this year's Sea & Shore Boxing Day Bonanza at Royal Tay. Conditions were not ideal with a cold and gusty westerly breeze but did not stop some exciting and exhillarating sailing.

Bill Carson in the Dart 18 lead the Dinghy 1 fleet in the first race but Peter Hay in the Fireball was close enough to take the race on handicap with Kevan Gibb (RS 200) third. Dinghy 2 saw very close competition between the standard Lasers and Radials with Callum Calder building up a good lead over David Woakes, Ian Drennan and David Kohler.

Some gear damage and capsizes took place in the nasty gusts which reduced the fleet for the second race which started shortly after the last boat finished race one. It was the same finishing order as the previous race in Dinghy 1 but David Kohler took third place in Dinghy 2 behind Callum and David. This meant that Peter took Dinghy 1 overall while Callum took Dinghy 2.

Following the racing the prize giving took place in the clubhouse with Maggie Smith presenting the prizes. Peter Hay thanked everyone who helped to make the Series such a success and thanked the competitors for coming. The final award was to the recepient of the Caithness Glass Trophy for the best sailing performance on Boxing Day and this went to Callum Calder.
