40 of the top performing competitors from Scottish sailing events gathered at Dalgety Bay Sailing Club from as far afield as Shetland and Oxford on the invitation of RYA Scotland for the 2007 RYAS Champion of Champions in association with Scottish Sailing and Bosuns Locker unaware that they were going to be treated to both extremes of conditions – Saturday was extremely windy and Sunday was extremely light.

The first race on Saturday produced thrills and spills for most competitors on a tight M-shaped course in F5-6, and the Contender of Ben Holden from Halifax emerged victorious after a near-flawless performance, from the 420 of Irwin & Kohler from Linlithgow – but it could have been a different story if the 420 had not capsized on the final round. Robbie Burns & Vicky Simpson, sailed their RS200 extremely well to be the first boat with a spinnaker, and take in third place around the tight course.

The second race of the day was sailed on a trapezoid course, and racing started in 27 knots, but when it exceeded 30 knots racing was abandoned – this was the right decision, because by the time everyone was ashore there was nearly 40 knots of breeze, and racing was cancelled for the day.

The next morning produced the other extreme of conditions, with the water flat as a millpond and, racing was eventually abandoned, leaving the Contender of Ben Holden from Halifax the clear winner of the ‘Scottish Field’ Trophy. Prizes were provided by RYA Scotland and Bosuns Locker.

Overall Results:

1st Ben Holden, Contender (Halifax SC)
2nd & 1st Youth, Peter Irwin & David Kohler, 420 (Linlithgow Loch SC)
3rd Robbie Burns & Vicky Simpson, RS200 (Largs SC)
4th & 1st Veteran, Ian Baillie, RS300 (Dalgety Bay SC)
5th Colin & Calum Tait, Tasar (Loch Earn SC)
