Leader Open at Melton Mowbray Sailing Club

by Jane Wharmby 12 Jul 2004 21:17 BST 10 July 2004

2 visiting boats joined 6 local teams at Melton Mowbray SC for a very enjoyable one-day Open meeting on 10th July.

Racing was very close in each of the three races on Saturday. In the first race Chris and Jane Wharmby established a lead after some very close tacking on the first two windward legs. Right to the end of the race Pete Driver and Annette Cave were close on their heels, followed by junior helm, Robert Morris, crewed by his Mum, Christine.

In the second race the other half of the Morris family (father Richard and daughter Sally) dominated the race and managed to hold off Robert and Christine who took second place followed by Shaun Doherty and Cliff Thompson.

The final race was a tense affair with Robert and Christine Morris leading the fleet and determined to take home the first place trophy. Pete Driver and Annette Cave were never far behind and finished the race 2nd, with Richard and Sally Morris in 3rd place.

The event was won by Robert and Christine Morris, Robert being the youngest helm to win a Leader Open Event for many years. In second place were Richard and Sally Morris and in third place Pete Driver and Annette Cave.

That wasn’t the end of the excitement though. On Sunday morning a fun race took place for Lady and Junior Helms, and one single handed male. Twice round the Island, leaving the fishermen to Port! Sally Morris, crewed by Dad, Richard, moved swiftly to take a convincing lead which was not to be broken by Jane Wharmby (crew: Chris), Paul Dickenson (on his own), Christine Morris (crew: Robert) and Jane Broomfield (crew: Mike). Line honours were taken by Sally and Richard.

Thank you to all at Melton Mowbray SC for a very enjoyable weekend!
