Finn Northerns at Ullswater Yacht Club

by Mike Woodhead 8 Jul 2004 08:07 BST 3-4 July 2004

Four Finns entered the Lord Birkett Trophy Race to contest both it and their own Northern Championships. The first day consisted of a 14 mile windward leeward course in torrential rain with wind blowing force 5 with stronger gusts. Billy McGuire headed for home and Mike Woodhead took a sudden interest in cruiser racing (having referred to them as "leadminers" for the last 30 years!).

Phil Laycock and Sander Kooij battled through the elements, Phil just beating Sander after some close racing. The Finn fleet and their friends enjoyed an excellent evening at Phil's parents and were prepared for day 2.

This proved to be sunny with a steady force 2. A slightly larger course was sailed, all three Finns were in fairly close order, with Phil Laycock leading until a suspect knee took it's toll and Sander retired, leaving Mike Woodhead the only Finn to complete the course (when he finally found the finishing line!).

Overall Results:

1st Phil Laycock, GBR51 (G.W.S.C.)
2nd Sander Kooij, GBR1 (G.W.S.C.)
3rd Mike Woodhead, GBR16 (R.Y.Y.C.)
