Quarter Ton Class at the Jersey Telecom Regatta - Day 1

Seventeen boats competed in the Quarter Ton Class on the first day of the ninth Jersey Telecom Regatta. Conditions were as near perfection as one might hope although maybe not stiff enough for some of the boats preferring the rough and tumble of more boisterous conditions.

Despite a fairly light start, the easterly winds quickly built to ten to fifteen knots, albeit with a few holes and occasionally shifts. The race committee set a windward/leeward course, approximately a mile long, between the Hinguette buoy (the windward mark) and the Les Fours buoy (the leeward mark). To complement generally benign sailing conditions, sailors were treated to some genuine Jersey sunshine throughout the day.

The first race set the pattern for the day with an impressive, if orderly, start that set the pattern for the day, close quarter competition but no work for an initially apprehensive protest committee. Racing started at 1230 with the last boat finishing the third and final race of the day at about 1700, a long, busy but very enjoyable day

Darren Marston's Catch was to rule the day with wins in races 1 and 3 but a somewhat disappointing fifth in the second race which was taken by Chris Frost and Kevin George's Tom Bombadil. Howard Sellers' Bullet took second overall featuring in the top three of all three races.

Saturday sees four races being run back to back with a further three on Sunday.
