How to ‘Go Fast Downwind’ – even when you are 10kg heavier than the rest of the fleet!
So the answer to this riddle is get as far back in the boat as possible when you are planing – but be very careful not to sink the transom. The other hard part is being able to react quickly to the wind dying and moving forward again. At the Laser Radial Nationals, I found myself catching up other heats in the racing - this was one of the most obvious differences in my boat trim and those I was catching off wind.
There are a few commandments in sailing which I used to make the Boat Whisperer DVDs – pull the rudder towards you and the boom will go towards the water – and push the rudder and it will go away from the water.
The Third Commandment is that nothing is always true without clarification. In this case the clarification is, "when planing"!
