Solo Nationals & Nations Cup at Paignton Sailing Club

by Claire Clark 17 Aug 2007 07:33 BST 28 July - 3 August 2007

Sponsored by SuperSpars

An excellent turnout of 90 entries descended upon Paignton SC with helms making the journey from as far as Scotland, Germany, Netherlands, Spain and Bermuda for what proved to be an excellent championship using a mixture of Olympic and trapezoid courses.

Sunday 29th July

Race 1 – City of Plymouth Trophy

After three general recalls for the first race, the black flag was brought out and racing got underway in a gentle force 2 with 8 boats collecting a BFD score. Simon Yates hit the port lay-line and was the first race leader but on the next round Vanda Young worked the shifts up the middle of the beat and looked good for the win, however on the final beat, the right hand side paid and Steve Denison took the first trophy of the week.

Race 2 – Jack Holt Trophy

After a long postponement the breeze had not settled so racing was abandoned and the fleet went home for the day.

Monday 30th July

Race 3 – Brixham YC Trophy

Monday’s racing got underway in a s/w force 2/3 with Derek Jackman, James Stevenson and Mike Ball making committed pin end starts to take a convincing lead, with Solo number 2 well placed in 12th position at the windward mark. That was the finishing order, making Derek the oldest helm to win a Solo championship race.

Race 4 – Association Cup

The second race of the day brought more general recalls under the black flag but when the race got away, Jamie Lea, Andy Davis, Jim Hunt and Simon Corper all started at the pin end. There were some big shifts as the fleet headed out towards Berry Head and when the breeze veered and piped up to planing strength, the boats on the right were able to lay the mark and developed a good lead with Jamie Lea taking the win from Andy Davis and Jim Hunt.

Tuesday 31st July

Race 5 – Mountfield Trophy

Race 6 – Severn Sailboats Trophy

The following morning only a light and variable force 1-2 onshore breeze had developed and the course area was moved further out of the bay in the hopes of finding some more wind. This was to be a memorable day for Stuart Bush who sailed immaculately to win both races despite having to consider the increasing influence of the tide at the northern end of Torbay.

Wednesday 1st August

Race 7 – Portlemouth Trophy

Wednesday brought similar conditions with one competitor describing the sea conditions as “bouncy”. Bob Taylor joined the list of race winners having headed to the left hand side of the course which had paid dividends. 2nd was Jim Hunt and 3rd Jamie Lea.

Race 8 – Gosling Dinghy Craft Trophy

In the second race of the day, Paul Hiles and Stuart Hydon got away on port from the committee boat end, with Hydon taking the win at the end of the run as the remaining breeze threatened to die away altogether.

Thursday 2nd August

Race 9 – River Dart Cup

Thursday brought an unsettled force 3 from the North West. Andy Couch led until the 2nd run of the course when he was passed by Jamie Lea who went on to win. Behind a battle for 2nd place ensued with Andy Davis working his way through from 4th to overtake both Steve Denison and Andy Couch who had fallen back to 4th.

During a prolonged postponement waiting for the wind to settle a local trawler drove right through the start line on autopilot and fouled his nets on the anchors of both the committee vessel and inner distance mark. After a visit from the coastguard and a tense exchange between vessels, the wind had died altogether and the fleet was sent ashore to await further signals ashore.

Race 10 – SB Marine Trophy

After a short break for tea and chips a northerly force 3 returned and racing resumed as normal, but as the race developed a major windshift required the windward mark to be moved in order to maintain what was a very unsettled beat to the finish. Chris Goldhawk took the win from Steve Broom and Chris Brown.

Friday 3rd August

Race 11 – Royal Corinthian YC Trophy

Race 12 – Team Purple Trophy

Friday brought the best sailing conditions of the week with brilliant sunshine and enough wind from the S/SW to give excellent, fully powered-up sailing for everyone. This was Mike Ball’s day to remember, taking both races in commanding style, the first from Steve Broom/Stuart Bush and the second from Jim Hunt/Andy Davis.

With discards taken into consideration, the last race result was enough to give Andy Davis the title of National Champion and also take the Nations Cup. Chris Goldhawk was the runner up and had sailed a remarkably consistent series as to be discarding a 9th and a 19th with no misdemeanors.

Thanks to Paignton SC for hosting a superb event and giving a warm welcome to the sailors and their families throughout the week. Thanks to PRO Ken Falcon Paignton Sailing Club for providing excellent racing in difficult conditions.

A vote of thanks must go to the event sponsors, Superspars for their excellent support of the Championships. And last but by no means least, thanks to Mike Rice of Fotoboat for being there to capture the action.
