J/105 racing at Skandia Cowes Week - Overall

by J/105 UK Class Association 16 Aug 2007 12:53 BST 4-11 August 2007

After no racing on Friday there were mixed feelings amongst the fleet about the need to race on Saturday as in both the J-Sprit Class second to fourth places were separated by only 2 points and in the J/105 Class first and second were split by only 2 points.

The J-Sprit class had their final start of the week at the Committee Vessel. The sea breeze filled in and a course was set to keep the boats out of the tide on the long downwind legs. A beat to Lymington Bank saw the J/110 Shades of Blue (Ed Holton) round in front of the J/105 J-Dream (David & Kirsty Apthorp), who jumped them on the kite hoist and led for the remainder of the race.

Meanwhile the J/92 Mojo (Robin & Jill Stevenson) had overtaken the J/92S Neilson RedEye (Pete Tyler) on the second beat to finish and claim the victory on IRC for not only the day, but also the week, having posted five wins. A second for J-Dream saw her claim second place on IRC in J-Sprit and win the J/105 Class for the second time.

The next event for the JBoat fleet is J-Cup hosted by Royal Western Yacht Club in Plymouth 23-25 August.

Overall Results: 1st J-Dream, David & Kirsty Apthorp
2nd Jolene, Geoff Payne
