Cadet Nationals at Pwhelli Sailing Club Regatta Fleet Report

by David Croft 14 Aug 2007 13:58 BST 28 July - 1 August 2007

Abigail Croft and Katie Hinde from Frensham Pond's sailing “Wacky When Wet” were convincing winners of the Regatta fleet (C-fleet) in the Cadet Class 60th anniversary National Championships held at the Pwhelli Sailing Club from 28th of July to 1st August. The regatta fleet is for novice sailors under 13 years or in their first season; Abbie was the second youngest helm.

The event was dominated by light to moderate winds and a difficult lumpy swell. These conditions made for challenging racing and competition was tougher than perhaps the results would indicate. There were twelve entries in all including several local entries from the newly formed Pwllheli Cadet Squadron who were regularly seen at the front of the fleet.

The twelve race series was a great success with all scheduled races being completed and with very few retirements among the competitors. The atmosphere was very friendly as well as competitive with the sailors helping each other come ashore and regularly sharing in beach games and the odd water fight! At the end of the week one or two moved on to join their elder brothers and sisters in the main fleet for Promotional Regatta of the World Championships.

Overall, first place went to Abigail Croft and Katie Hinde in 9378 “Wacky When Wet” from Frensham Ponds on 11 points, second with 25 points were Anna Davies and Sarah O’Brian in 8230 “Shadow” from Fishers Green, third place with 28 points went to Marcus Young from Frensham Ponds crewed by Jack Gosling from Pwllheli in 8391 “Limited Edition”. There were 12 races in all, 2 discards. For further details see www.cadetclass.org.uk/events/2007/uknationals

Cadet World Championship day 3
Being surrounded by hills and mountains has the inevitable effect So far the conditions on Lake Lipno have provided for excellent and challenging sailing, however being surrounded by hills and mountains can mean that the winds are shifty and can be light at time, and this proved to be the case on day 3.
