118th Travemuende Woche - Overall

by Andreas Kling 29 Jul 2007 22:54 BST

118th Travemuende Week finished with umbrellas, charm and optimism

The 118th Travemuende Week finished on Sunday evening (29 July) with a spectacular firework and participants as well as organisers being in good mood. The changeable weather reduced the number of visitors this summer, when less than 900,000 people came to enjoy the event and watch the races. But the visitors stayed longer on-site and were satisfied by the festival. Also the crews of the 650 boats participating had a lot of fun. Despite calms and storms nearly the whole schedule containing more than 300 single races were sailed.

“The mix of dinghies and traditional keel boats was perfect but we certainly missed some entries in a few classes,” said Karin Boege and Claus-Dieter Stolze, heads of the Travemuende Week. The German Junior Championship of the Laser class and the German Youth Championship of the Europe class as well as 52 Folkeboats who are going to determine their German Champion during the 119th Travemuende Week next year, have been the highlights in a quantitative and qualitative way. Also the focus on the skiffs with the 18 footer holding the German Grand Prix directly off the beach and the Euro Cup of the five RS classes has been a positive aspect. “But we will cancel the small fleets in the future”, argued Boege and Stolze.

In order to establish a better infrastructure, a higher amount of funds and improved general conditions from the event, the organising Luebeck Yacht Club (LYC) and the city of Luebeck have arranged a workgroup. The members of the committee will draw up a list of musts partly to be done already in 2008. 2009 when the 120th Travemuende Week takes place, everything will be “a jour”, promises Luebeck’s Mayor Bernd Saxe.

In moderate to fresh winds on the last day of racing, the winners in 14 classes have been honoured. Scoring two bullets, the crew of Kai Mares from Kiel, Germany, gained the top position in the Platu 25 class who has determined their best German team. Helge and Christian Sach (Zarnekau, Germany) celebrated their 13th Travemuende Week victory scoring two bullets in the Formula 18 class. Since the class was launched in Germany in 2000, the two brothers never lost a competition. “After being pretty slow the day before, we checked our schoolbook during the night and changed the trim of our Capricorn,” reported the duo. “Anyway, the victory wasn’t a present at all.”

The Sach’s already won the Olympic Tornado class in the first part of the sailing week which was their overall victory number twelve. Local hero Simon Grotelueschen defended his Laser Junior’s title on Tuesday after a difficult jury hearing when the medal race ran out of the time limit to start it. Tania Tammling (18) from Heist, Northern Germany, won the Youth Championship of the Europe class.

On the final day nearly 70.000 people visited the Travemuende Week and lingered along the promenades despite of the rainy weather. All together 870.000 visitors have been counted. “After the record-breaking start on the first two days, they could have been more,” said Uwe Bergmann, head of the event planning agency that realised the festival concept ashore. “But the guests have been satisfied so they will surely come back next year.”

The 119th Travemuende Week will take place from 18 through 27 July 2008.
