118th Travemuende Woche - Day 4

by Andreas Kling 25 Jul 2007 09:47 BST

Home mayor and local heroes win

What a day on Tuesday (24 July) at the 118th Travemuende Week; Thunderstorm warning, a long jury hearing, happy winners and a lot of fun for two mayor’s sailing the Rotspon Cup match race – all happened the day before half time at the big sailing regatta and festival held in Travemuende, Germany until 29th of July.

The difficult weather situation continued with a light to moderate breeze in the morning let Race Director Walter Mielke sent out all competitors on time for an 11.30 start except the Olympic Tornados missing their wind limit at the beginning. Whilst Luebeck’s mayor Bernd Saxe beat Rostock’s lord mayor Roland Methling in a fun match race on the inner fiord of the river Trave gaining a huge six litre bottle of red wine (Rotspon) the conditions on the race courses outside got worse. “We had a serious thunderstorm warning just after lunch”, reported Mielke, “so we didn’t want to take any risk for the sailors.”

The RS Euro Cups missed to start any races as the Tornados never left the shore. But the spectacular 18-Footers managed two more short races only cancelling their long distance race planned for offshore. The final day saw the leading crew Andy and Dave Richards with Andrew Fairley scoring another two bullets and celebrating the victory in the German Grand Prix of their European Grand Prix Series in a brave manner.

The medal race of the Laser class could not be started due to a long jury hearing of about 90 minutes. Runner-up Malte Kamrath from Berlin had protested the leader Simon Grotelueschen after a pre-start collision. The atmosphere was very tense between the two friends because Kamrath tried to knock the local heroes out of the medal race by a disqualification. But his intention failed when the jury finally penalized him on racing rule 15. Grotelueschen defended his German Junior Champion title and won the Travemuende Week overall in the open Laser Standard class again.

On Wednesday (25 July) the last race for the Tornados, the international German Youth Championship of the Europes as for the Dyas and Trias are scheduled. The RS skiffs will take on with their Euro Cups.
