118th Travemuende Woche - Day 2

Three bullets for Richards

The 118th Travemuende Week saw three tough races in fickle winds on Sunday (22 July) at the Bay of Luebeck, Germany. In the German Grand Prix of the 18-Footers the Swiss-based British sailors Richards/Fairley/Richards dominated the international fleet of 14 skiffs. They scored three bullets and left the next British trio Browne/Tait/Oliver in their stern waters. Two Russian crews want to grab the victory in the Olympic Tornado class from the table of local heroes Helge and Christian Sach who would celebrate their twelfth overall win. But the Germans stroke back.

The start of the Tornados became a puzzle when race officer Peter Ramcke abandoned the first shot after a while when the wind calmed down slightly. It was a pity for Helge and Christian Sach from Zarnekau, Germany who gained the lead quickly far ahead of the fleet. Repeating the race in the afternoon A Cat expert Nils Bunkenberg (Surendorf, Germany) and his new crew Susanne Hahn surprisingly scored a bullet and left the Russian teams Pavel Sozykin/Vitaly Russu and Alexey Chekrygin/ Valeriy Seleznev as well as the Sach’s behind. Scoring two bullets in the second and third race the brothers fought back and took the overall lead ahead of Sozykin and Russu. “In the second race it was a duel with the other Russians on the finish line. It was just a metre,” said crew Christian Sach being happy about the triumph after a moderate start.

It was busy on the starting line of the Olympic Laser class who also determines the German Junior Champion. A black flag was necessary to restrain the snappy fleet. Later the jury on the water interfered and titleholder Simon Grotelueschen from the organizing Luebeck Yacht Club (LYC) got a yellow flag double penalty (720 deg turn) because of pumping shortly before reaching the finish line. “I think it was unfair“, said the 20-year-old angrily. Because of the jury’s decision he couldn’t score his second bullet.

”In the last race it was just the left side paying off,” reported Grotelueschen after a long day out on the course. The young sailor returned at 20 h. Anyway finish fourth he kept the first place in the Championship and the also in the overall ranking which is open to all ages. His friend Malte Kamrath from Berlin, Germany, is one point behind on the second place. Alexander Schlonski (Rostock, Germany) who is another member of squad of the German Sailing Association (DSV) placed third.

The next races are scheduled for Monday (23 July) from 11.30 h on. At 13 h the Euro Cup of five RS skiff classes starts. Light and shifting winds are predicted so all persons being involved need strong nerves.
