Spaniards smash J80 Worlds in La Trinité

At first it came as a surprise, but the astonishing superiority of the strong Spanish contingent at the beginning of the week, turned into a close to complete triumph as Santander's skippers Jose Maria Torcida Seghers and Ignacio Camino struggled against each other until the final decisive 11th race.

Torcida Seghers comes out a beautiful yet modest champion with 5 wins overall; "We came here with very limited objectives knowing we would face the word's best. We've only been sailing the J80 seriously and competitively since last October. We decided to train as a team with the entire 30 strong fleet gathered in Santander. All that hard work has paid off."

Germany's Ulrich Muenker's third place overall prevented the Spaniards from heading home with a unique grand slam in the J80 worlds history. For the very first time, the winner has not come from the host country.

The international class is on a great roll, with fleets growing in Spain, Italy, Germany, England and the United States...

124 J80s had entered this competition last Tuesday... who knows how many will show up from July 7th until 13th next year in Germany...
