Heron Southern Championships at Chipstead Sailing Club

With a total of 18 boats the wind was was moderate from the west, and a committee boat start the majority of boats went off on a starboard tack with Jon Hunt and Nigel Darby first over the line. After two laps Martin Treadway and then Peter Moulton overtook the two leaders, Jon Hunt finishing 4th.

After lunch the temperature dropped and the wind increased with more gusts and changing to a more south westerly. The majority of boats started on starboard, but Jon Hunt, John Stuchbery and Derek Dodds started at the port end and got away well. By the time Jon Hunt was at the east end of the lake he was a good two hundred yards in front of the fleet, the nearest boat was sailed single handed by Philip Haughton,who crept closer and closer, Ftaer three laps Jon Hunt finished first with Philip about four seconds behind.

The third race started with heavy cloud and very little wind, mainly from the south, to south west. John Spragg got away first followed by Jon Hunt and then Nigel Darby and Derek Dodd. At the first mark John Spragg went round first, Jon Hunt nearly went round the wrong way and touched the mark. While doing a turn three boats went past. The wind died off and only one lap was completed in torrential rain. Nigel Darby was 1st followed by Derek Dodds, John Spragg, Martin Treadway and Jon Hunt.
