Audi X-35 Cup at Medemblik, Holland - Event 2

by John Parker 15 May 2007 20:27 BST

The second Audi X-35 Cup of the five event series was at Medemblik, Holland on the 13th May. The weekend began with a 30 knot breeze and any teams hoping to train on the Saturday were left disappointed.

However, Sunday morning brought in a light southerly and after a general recall the 16 boat fleet got underway led by Team Audi. As anticipated by the forecast, the wind moved to the east during the race and it was Perfect Ten that capitalised on the shift moving into second place.

In the second race, Qube led from the pin end all the way to the finish. Chasing was Quantum Racing with fellow Quantum boat Perfect Ten finishing third.

In the final race of the day, again Qube led from the pin end, however Quantum Racing pulled into the lead. ‘Drs X’ and La Dolce Vita followed the two leaders, however by the finish Perfect Ten had moved into third. With six points, Qube won the event. Perfect Ten finished second and now lead the series – a great success for the five members of the Volvo Keelboat Squad who joined the boat this season.

The next major event for the European X-35 fleet is the North Sea Regatta in two weeks time.

Update from Rob Grieg-Gran, Perfect Ten:

After the second Audi X-35 Cup event on 13th May, it was UK-based ‘Perfect Ten’ that emerged at the top of the leaderboard. This 5 event one-design series is hosted by Medemblik Regatta Centre in Holland and runs throughout the season, acting as a training ground for the top European X-35 teams.

The first event, two weeks ago, attracted 17 entries and it was the current world champion Nic Bol (a member of the Mean Machine team) aboard Quantum Racing who took the gold medal. However, fellow Quantum boat ‘Perfect Ten’ were hot on their heals.

This season, four members of the RYA Volvo Keelboat Squad have joined this boat hoping for success at the North Sea Regatta and the X-35 Worlds, which will be held alongside the Olympic classes as part of Kieler Woche in June.

140 competitors arrived in Medemblik this weekend for the second Audi Cup. The event was won by the Dutch team Qube, with Perfect Ten again coming in second. With 6 races now counting, they lead the series with 14 points.

The next major X-35 competition is the North Sea Regatta starting on the 25th May where 22 boats have already entered.
