Topper Travellers at Bury Lake Young Mariners

On Sunday 13th May, 24 toppers arrived at BLYM for their annual Topper Traveller Open Meeting. The wind was light but forecast to increase, but more of a disappointment was the persistent rain.

Eventually the wind increased and settled as forecast to allow the first race to get underway cleanly and on time. There was constant changing of positions in the front of the fleet, but eventually Matt Rivers stretched an impressive lead on the fleet to take the bullet followed by James Patience and Graham Rivers.

After a break for lunch and some more rain, the second race began on the second attempt after a general recall. Alex Hall had a storming first lap leading the fleet, but eventually dropped to 8th by the finish. Annabel Cattermole also had an amazing first lap coming round in 5th but couldn’t hold onto it and finished 18th. The race was won by James Patience and Matt Rivers recovered from 10th to take the second spot followed by Graham Rivers.

Race 3 started with two individual recalls, but the offenders came back to re-cross the line. Graham Rivers lead the race for 3 laps, but couldn’t quite hold it and ended up in 2nd position to Matt Rivers. Ashley Greenall made recovered from 12th to finish 7th – A very good race result for his first ever regatta.

With the wind dropping and the rain set in, the fourth race was cancelled. Consequently, there was no discard awarded so all three races counted towards the overall result.
