Reville Points & Yaverland Race at Shanklin Sailing Club

Yaverland Race for Sprint 15s

Shanklin's annual race to Yaverland and back was contested in blustery force 4 conditions, although the sea state was quite flat. Only 10 boats took to the start which was a little disappointing.

Paul Tanner was first away electing to sail Mushy Blues Eyes una-rigged up the first, so called beat, Andrew Capasizee made his usual dash for the start line to cross it a mere 35 seconds behind everybody else, but he did redeem himself by rounding the windward mark in forth position, Erl Bond rounding in second with Geoff Fishy Howlett in third.

On the downwind leg Tanner unfurled his jib to make use of the increasing wind strength and opened up a reasonable lead to round the leeward mark first.

The 2 mile beat back from Yaverland saw the fleet well spread out by the time they returned to Shanklin only to have to repeat the whole procedure thanks to the sadistic tendencies of one of the race officers. Tanner was first across the finish line with Howlett second and Erling Holmberg third.

Revill Points Series Race 6

The Thursday evening race was the sixth in the Revill Points series. 11 boats made the start with Piggy Pierce senior so keen to get on with the race that he was well over the line as the gun was fired. Erl (007) Bond thought he was better placed at the start and returned as the second gun was fired to put himself neatly into tenth position. Paul Tanner sailing Misty Blue Eyes and Simon Giles in Heart Attack Info both made perfect starts and were away at the front of the fleet. Giles elected to sail an inside course while Tanner sailed out into the slackening tide to pick up more wind along with Geoff Fishy Howlett.

At the end of the first lap Howlett, Tanner and Giles were away at the front of the fleet closely followed by Andrew Capasizee and the Schitzo Kid. On the final leg to the finish Howlett was first, Giles once again sailed the inside course and just managed to beat Tanner for the second position, while Bond with his usual finesse worked his way up to fourth.
