Miracle Southerns at Margate Yacht Club

by Gaye Lamb 14 Jun 2004 15:42 BST 5-6 June 2004

Margate Yacht Club hosted this year's Miracle Southern Area Championship that heralded the club's return to serious circuit racing.

A light north easterly wind prevailed on day one and Ian Kelly, with his crew Heidi Cokayne quickly stamped his aurthority on the first race finishiing a leg and a half ahead of John and Jean Reed in second place. Gaye Lamb with crew Alex Baker finished third. Race two finished in a similar fashion with Ian Kelly's lead reduced a little. With Kelly's dominance the real battle was between Lamb and Reed for second place.

On day two the fleet were joined by Wilsonian members Peter Horner (Andrew Clarke) and Chris Wallis (Andrew Smith). The wind remained north easterly and light in the morning and again Kelly dominated the fleet. Horner finished second in race one with Wallis finishing second in race two.

The wind increased to a steady force three in the afternoon for the final race with Kelly again first followed by Wallis in second and Reed third. Local knowledge enabled Lamb to catch up strongly on the last round to finish fourth.
