Streaker Open at Greensforge Sailing Club

by Ian Cooper 20 Apr 2004 15:09 BST 17 April 2004

Nine Streakers, including three visitors – a father and son combination, John and Paul Burgoine, from Tamworth and Shustoke; and Alan Simmons from Lancing on the south coast - competed over four races at Greensforge Sailing Club. The event started with little wind but this veered and increased from the south-west through the day – causing more than a few problems for the OOD, Lyndon Beasley.

John Burgoine took the lead in the first race but was overhauled by John Wagstaff - local knowledge comes through once again. Further down the fleet, Greensforge juniors Simon Beasley and Dan Bishop were having a right old ding-dong.

Race two saw visitor John put Waggy into second with his son Paul taking third. The OOD set a nice short start line, near the dam wall for race three – this kept everyone concentrating – and again local John pipped visitor Burgoine senior to the finish. Now it was all down to the final race…where the Burgoines took the lead places while John Wagstaff tussled with Simon Beasley and then just put Paul into third place on the final tack for the line.

So with two wins and two second places each it was off to the rule book for the decision. Deep in the appendices the overall leader is found to be the ‘winner of the last race’ – so the glory went deservedly to John Burgoine. Junior honours went to Dan Bishop, fifth overall, and oh yes our commodore, Peter Baker, fell in again, just like last year!
