The Cadet National Championships were held at Weymouth over the 29th to the 31st May. There were one hundred and twelve boats taking place, with ninety eight boats in the main combined fleet and fourteen boats in the regatta fleet.

This event was also the first Indicator for the World Championships to be held in Australia this Christmas. All races are sailed over a triangle, sausage, sausage beat.

Race 1:

The fleet were away first time into a Southerly force 3. The fleet spread all over the course with no side clearly favoured. First at the windward mark was “Challenger” William Rusden/Matthew Davanzo followed by “Inspiration” Thomas/Emily Kinver, “White Stuff” Ben Muskett/Sasha Brumi, “Whatever” Alex Shanahan/Katie Barr, “Harum Scarum” James Rusden/Mark Traviss Bell and “Executrix” David Brewer/Katrina Brewer. With the top third boats very close round the mark the reaches were sailed very high by most. There were significant gains made by those who took the direct mark to mark course. At the leeward mark William Rusden now led Alex Shanahan, David Brewer, Ben Muskett, James Rusden and Thomas Kinver. The race officer had moved the windward mark 30 degrees right and shortened the beat with the wind dropping. William Rusden maintained his lead to the gun. Those following with little covering swapped places regularly. At the line David Brewer was second, Ben Muskett third and the fast finishing “Bad Influence” Thomas Makey/Jonathon Kimber fourth.

Race 2:

Again the fleet were away first time with just two boats over at the one minuet gun. At the windward mark “Forty Two” Stephen Videlo/James Jopling and “Flirting with Danger” Jonathon Moss/Sophie Dingwall rounded clear of James Rusden,”Genesis” Ben Lyon/Jenny Sudell, “No Fear” Amelia Hughes/Sarah Dallimore and David Brewer. By the leeward mark Stephen Videlo and Jonathon Moss had broken clear of the rest. James Rusden rounded third having obtained water on Amelia Hughes and Ben Lyon. David Brewer was sixth. By the next leeward Stephen Videlo had broken clear of Jonathon Moss who rounded ahead of “Tantrum” Jodie/Stevie Green who had been ninth at the first mark. David Brewer was fourth, Amelia Hughes fifth and Tomas Makey sixth. After the final sausage Stephen was 40 seconds clear of Jonathon and Jodie. Thomas Makey was now fourth and that is how they crossed the line.

Race 3:

After lunch afloat the final race for the day was away first time, again into a Southerly force 3. This was “Get a Grip” Andrew Twinn/Aaron Wolf‘s race. They led from start to finish. Considerably clear at the first mark and taking the gun by a good margin.

Second at the first windward were “Hypnosis” Peter Lawrence/Christopher Tiernan, William Rusden, Jodie Green, David Brewer and Jonathon Moss. At the next windward mark, Jodie Green was second, followed by Jonathon Moss, William Rusden and “Utopia” Aaron Cooper/Jonathon Hay. The next windward saw Jodie Green in a clear second. William Rusden, Jonathon Moss and Aaron Cooper arrived three abreast at the mark, some having over stood the lay line. Jodie Green finished second, third William Rusden and fourth Jonathon Moss.

Day 2 Race 4:

The wind was now South Westerly force 2-3. Away at the first attempt, and again no side seeming to be favoured up the first beat. First round the windward was “Harum Scarum” James Rusden/Mark Traviss-Bell, closely followed by “Blue Moon” Kate Allam/Amy Yeoman, “Whatever” Alex Shanahan/Katie Barr, Thomas Makey, Andrew Twinn and Jodie Green. The first four held positions on the reaches with Jodie Green just getting inside Andrew Twinn at the leeward mark. With the sky darkening rapidly and the wind strengthening Jodie Green led Thomas Makey, James Rusden and Kate Allam at the second Leeward. With no covering up the beat Thomas Makey just squeezed into the lead at the mark coming in on the port lay line and tacking in front of Jodie Green. James Rusden was third, “No Fear” Amelia Hughes/Sarah Dallimore fourth and Alex Shanahan fifth. Thomas Makey took the gun from Jodie Green, Amelia Hughes and James Rusden.

Race 5:

With the sky clearing the second race got under way into a South force 3. Kate Allam was first onto the reach followed by “Lift Off” Jamie Mayhew/Ryan Bolger, Stephen Videlo, William Rusden, Amelia Hughes and Jonathon Moss. By the leeward mark the first three had broken clear of the chasers. Positions being held. Stephen Videlo rounded the next windward ahead of Kate Allam, Jamie Mayhew, William Rusden and Jonathon Moss. At the final leeward mark Kate Allam rounded in front of Stephen Videlo, William Rusden, Jonathon Moss and Jodie Green who had worked her way up the fleet. Kate Allam held on to take the gun from Stephen Videlo, William Rusden and Jodie Green.

Race 6:

The wind was now a South Westerly Force 3. With no one over at the start Stephen Videlo and Jonathon Moss rounded the windward mark first having gone right up the beat. Third was “The Business” Christopher Proffitt/Alex Coulton having gone left. They were followed by Kate Allam, “He who Dares” Edward Impey/Jamie Millard, Thomas Makey and “Will Power” Will Branton/Maddie Harris. By the wing mark the first three had broken clear. Jonathon Moss rounded the second windward just ahead of Stephen Videlo and Christopher Proffitt. They were now a minute clear of Thomas Makey, William Rusden, Kate Allam and Jodie Green. By the final beat the wind had shifted South Easterly. The finish line was set accordingly. Stephen Videlo rounded the final leeward just ahead of Jonathon Moss and Christopher Proffitt. The first three still well clear of the chasers. Stephen Videlo took the gun from Christopher Proffitt and Jonathon Moss. Fourth was William Rusden.

Final Day Race 7:

With the forecast stronger winds failing to materialise, the race started into a South/South/Easterly force 3. Four boats were over during the one minute before the start and three were over at the start. The right side was favoured, “Lithium” Tye Wichard/Ben Harden rounded first followed by William Rusden, “Engma” Sophie Weguelin/Imogen Stanley, Christopher Proffitt, “Grim Reaper” Harry Harris/Jessica Quinlan and “Relax” Jamie Crapnell/James Harvey Nevin. At the Leeward William Rusden led Tye Wichard, Harry Harris, Andrew Twinn, Jamie Crapnell and Amelia Hughes. After the first sausage William Rusden led Andrew Twinn, Harry Harris,Tye Wichard and Amelia Hughes. At the final windward mark Christopher Proffitt rounded first just ahead of Andrew Twinn, Amelia Hughes, “White Stuff” Ben Muskett/Sasha Brumi, Harry Harris and Amelia Hughes. At the final leeward Christopher Proffitt covered Andrew Twinn up the middle. The chasers went left and right. One hundred yards short of the line the wind dropped in the middle and boats on the left and right started to overhaul the leaders. First was William Rusden, second Ben Muskett followed by “Crème de la Crème” James Jaffa/Myelie Binmore and Amelia Hughes.

Race 8:

With the wind now South Easterly force 3 the fleet set of up the beat first time. Shortly after the start the wind shifted right. Those who were left gained significantly. David Brewer rounded first and then proceeded to sail away from the rest. Thomas Makey was second followed by Andrew Twinn, Stephen Videlo, James Jaffa and “Northern Exposure” Charlotte Lawrence/Connie Stock. The second windward mark was re-laid forty five degrees west. By the second leeward mark David Brewer led by 45 seconds from Andrew Twinn, Thomas Makey, Stephen Videlo and Charlotte Lawrence. This was pegged back to 45 seconds at the final leeward with the order the same. David Brewer took the gun from Andrew Twinn, Stephen Videlo and Thomas Makey.

Final Race:

With the Championships still in the balance the wind had freshened to a force 4 southerly for this crucial last race. For the first time I can remember the fleet were away first time to complete a championship without a recall or sight of the dreaded Black Flag! Alex Shanahan completed the beat first, followed by “Will 2 Win” Joe/Fred Williams, Stephen Videlo, Will Branton, Jonathon Moss and Thomas Makey. By the leeward Alex Shanahan and Stephen Videlo were clear of Will Branton, Jonathon Moss, David Brewer and Thomas Makey. At the windward Alex Shanahan, Stephen Videlo and Jonathon Moss were separated by the width of a jib as they raced to the guard. Will Branton was fourth ahead of Oliver Impey and David Brewer. Going up the final beat Jonathon Moss led Stephen Videlo, Alex Shanahan and Will Branton. That is how they crossed the line.

This meant that the Cadet National Champion 2004 is Stephen Videlo and James Jopling. Adding the Nationals to the Inland Nationals they won at Easter.
