24 International 14s representing the USA, Australia, GBR and Canada started the Pacific Rim Championships today. Sun, air temperature of 84 degrees, very warm water, fantastic scenery - not bad for mid April. The breeze 7-14 knot breeze was quite shifty and it was critical to find the lanes downwind.

Race 1 was won by Brad Ruetenick & Todd Czarnecki from the San Diego, USA followed Chris Turner from the UK sailing with ex World Champion Kris Bundy.

Races 2 and 3 were won convincingly by Ron Bohm and Pete Mohler from Santa Barbara USA followed both times by Andrew Penman from the UK with Canadian John Vincze. Both boats are Bieker 3s with new "quite big top" Alexander mains. Penman/Vincze also have the new bendier Bieker mast.

Getting 24 14s to the starting line in the middle of the Pacific is a serious exercise achieved through the efforts of Hawaii fleet supreme and long time 14 sailor Andy Bates supported by sponsorship from Horizon Line and Maersk Sealand and West Marine in association with the Global Sports Alliance.

The event continues until Monday.

Day 1 results:

1 Boehm/Mohler (USA)
2 Penman/Vincze (GBR/CAN)
3 Turner/Bundy (GBR/USA)
4 Irwin/Von Sydow (AUS/USA)
5 Hyter/Pouitt (AUS)
6 Goodson/Derricks (USA)
7 Ruetenik/Czarnecki (USA)
8 Alexander/Chisholm (AUS)
