Ainslie dominates Finn class in Palma

Great Britain’s Ben Ainslie dominated the Finn class on the second day of racing at the 35th HRH Princess Sofia Trophy Regatta.

A further three races were sailed and Ainslie won all of the races, putting his score up to five race wins out of five races. He has established a thirteen point lead over nearest rival Marin Misura of Croatia.

Olympic gold medallist Shirley Robertson and team of Sarah Ayton and Sarah Webb also put a number of first places amongst their score line. After a slightly shaky start, the team won two of the three races today to move up to sixth place overall. The German team of Kristin Wagner, Anna Hoell and Veronika Lochbrunner currently lead the class by eleven points from team mates and world silver medallists Ulrike Schuemann, Wiebke Buelle and Winnie Lipert.

Also moving up through the ranks are RYA Team GBR Tornado sailors Leigh McMillan and Mark Bulkeley. The pairing scored a fifteenth, second and sixth, which sees them move up into fifth place overall. Americans John Lovell and Charlie Ogletree currently lead the class from Fernando Echavarri and Anton Paz of Spain.

In the 470 women’s class, Christina Bassadone and Katherine Hopson managed to hang on to sixth place overall and scored their best result in the regatta so far, a third place. Whilst in the men’s 470 class, RYA Development Squad sailors Nick Asher and Elliot Willis continued their good form into the second day of the event and are currently placed ninth overall with Nick Rogers and Joe Glanfield behind them in eighteenth place.

Current world champion Siren Sundby of Norway dominated the Europe class today and has established a healthy lead over Min Dezillie of Belgium. Team GBR sailor Laura Baldwin continues to score consistently in the 126 boat fleet and is currently lying just out of the top ten in twelfth place overall.
