Laser Open at Burghfield Sailing Club

by Dave Smith 6 Apr 2004 14:52 BST

Blusterly conditions greeted 30 Lasers for the annual open meeting at Burghfield Sailing Club on Sunday 4th April. Local sailor Will Hemsley stepped back in to the lead after absence of over six months and won the first race, pushed hard by Steve Pears from Aldenham who finished 2nd.

The outcome of race 2 looked settled with Nick Jackson in the lead until a squall left several boats upturned at the gybe mark on the ultimate lap. Andy Leigh and John Cooper of Burghfield survived intact to finish 1and 2 respectively. Mark Jones recovered from the capsize quickly and managed to grab third.

The final race was won by one of the youngest entrants, Mark Jones , aged 18 of Burghfield, who led for the majority of the race with Andy Leigh finishing in second place.

The event was won by Andy Leigh with a 1st, 2nd & 5th, a notable success in a borrowed boat. Roberta Hartley took prize for the first lady and first Radial sailor. Mark Jones was the first youth and Nick Jackson, the first master.
