Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club Winter Dinghy Series

by Bill Harris 5 Apr 2004 08:12 BST Nov-March

The final races in the Royal Channel Islands Yacht Club's Winter Dinghy series were run in St Aubin's Bay on 27th March. With just one knot of easterly breeze registering it looked as though the eleven strong fleet would have a miserable time hanging around waiting for a breeze to fill in but, to the committee boat crew's joy and relief, the zephyrs quickly turned into a five knot breeze as ordered and the first of the two races got under way shortly after ten a.m.

Of the seven boats that raced in the Open Class it was David Carter's RS200, Dragon Fly, that took the day winning both races by a narrow margin ahead of Jeff Speller’s standard rig Laser in the first race and Martin Speller’s radial rig Laser in the second. Martin, the series leader by half a point up to this time, took third place in the first race and Jeff third in the second. Heather Speller sailed her Laser Radial consistently well to come fourth in both races and Tony Newcombe fifth, sailing his National 12, The Joker.

Overall Results: (Open class)

1 David Carter - RS200, with 11 points
2 Martin Speller - Laser Radial, 12 points
3 Emma Speller - Laser 4.7, 33.5 points
4 Jeff Speller - Laser Standard Rig, 36 points
5 Tony Newcombe - National 12, 42 points
6 Heather Speller - Laser Radial, 46 points
7 Tom Leveridge - Laser Radial, 63 points
8 Tim Faudemer - Topper, 67 points
9 Clive Farnham - Laser Standard Rig, 72 points
10 Tony Whitney - Laser Radial, 73 points
11 Simon Le Huray - Laser Radial, 87 points

The Optimist Class saw four boats on the water on Saturday. Henry Perkins having established a clear lead half way through the series, consolidated this success by winning both races convincingly, despite being over the line at the start of the second race. Charles Perkins took second and third whilst Fleur Moisan third and second. Once discards were accounted for it was Charles who came a close second overall, well ahead of Chloë Denoual.

Overall Results: (Optimist class)

1 Henry Perkins with 12 points
2 Charles Perkins, 16 points
3 Chloë Denoual, 25 points
4 Fleur Moisan, 29 points
5 Lydia Carter, 32 points

The Winter Series has been running for three years and has seen a welcome revival of dinghy racing in St Aubin’s Bay. The dinghy fleet’s next opportunity to enjoy the Bay will be on 25th April when the RCIYC will be staging the Standard Bank Spring Regatta.
