by Flavie Caulier 7 May 2000 12:16 BST
At last !
Philippe Monnet rounded the Cape of Good Hope at 14h43mn49s GMT. After 4 months at sea and innumerable problems, the skipper of UUNET has at last turned the right hand corner and is now heading North, towards the finishing line… Last position at 14.43 GMT : 34°21’ S - 18°30’ E
Good Hope with a following wind
Finally, the third and last of the legendary capes of this wrong-way-round circumnavigation has been rounded. A cape that Philippe can rename "Cape Deliverance", because after a very painful exit from the Indian Ocean where flat calms alternated with storms, the skipper has entered the Atlantic with following winds of 20 knots !
UUNET is now heading NW at an average speed of 13 knots, which should allow him to regain a little lead over Mike Golding. So hoist the spinnaker and, France here he comes !
