Firefly South-West Area Championships Overall

by Steven Greaves 4 May 2000 13:36 BST

27 Fireflies made the annual pilgrimage to Restronguet Sailing Club on the first May bank holiday for the SouthWest Area Championships.

Cornwall supplied its usual fantastic weather with all seven races in sparkling sunshine and 15-20 knots winds.

Steve Tylcote, this time with new crew Debs Kershaw, continued his winning ways, after Lymington, by winning the four windiest races. Two 3rd places were sufficient to allow them to discard an OCS and still gain the title of South West Champions for 2000.

Barney Smith and Ed Smith, crewed respectively by Damien Boreham and Lucy Barber, took the battle for 2nd place to the final race with the Smith/Boreham combination just edging infront.

The rest of the fleet saw incredibly tight racing with eleven of the twenty seven boats gaining top five race results.

The Firefly Single Handed National Championship was held on the Sunday evening with Martin English reaping the rewards of a years hard training to come from behind on the penultimate beat to clinch the title.
