Europrix 45 Championships at Hamble River Sailing Club

by Eddie Mays 21 Oct 2003 16:40 BST 17th – 19th October 2003

The Europrix 45 championship was held as part of the Hamble River’s Autumn / Mid-winter meeting last weekend. An afternoon start on Friday allowed for two races on the first day. With the wind coming off the Hill Head shore all weekend the beats were always going to be tricky. Glyn Williams (Wolf) started prematurely in the first race and by the time he had returned to start correctly the rest of the fleet were at least 150 metres ahead. He made the best of the 2nd beat to round the top mark behind the leader, Peter Morton in Atomic. But David Franks sailing Rebel overtook him on the short beat to the finishing line. Peter Morton also took the second race with Williams 2nd ahead of Franks.

On Saturday the class had three races. Glyn Williams won the first two with Chris Little on board Bounder improving in each race from 3rd to 2nd and finally taking the last race of the day. Peter Morton was consistent with three 4th places and this gave a small overnight advantage to Glyn Williams. On Sunday the class started ahead of the main Winter Series classes and sailed a two lap windward / leeward course on both races. Morton found his first day’s form to take the gun both times. Close behind him the minor places were shared by Williams and David McLean’s Babbalaas. After allowing for the single discard Glyn Williams took the title by a single point from Peter Morton with David McLean 3rd.
