Cadet Nationals at the Weymouth & Portland National Sailing Academy

by Steve Proffitt 24 Aug 2003 13:13 BST 18-22 August 2003

The Dean & Reddyhoff Cadet Nationals were sailed at Weymouth from the 18th to 22nd August with 130 boats competing.

Day 1, saw three races in a Southerley Force 3. Race 1 saw “Flirting with Danger” Jonathon Moss and Sophie Dingwall lead from the start until 50yds to the finish. Jodie/Stevie Green in “Tantrum” picked off a number of boats up the last beat to take the gun. Andrew Mackay/Jonathon Kimber in “Black Otter” were third. Race 2 saw “Amadeus” Alex/Josephine Palmer take the lead at the second windward and maintain the advantage to the line. “Whatever” Alex Shanahan/George Ayre worked up the fleet to finish second and “Executrix”, James Wade/Katie Barr third. Race three was dominated by “Get a Grip” Andrew Twinn/Aaron Woolf who led from the black flag start to the finish. The rest of the places swapped frequently with “Touchwood” Adam Richards/Sam Muskett taking it from “No Fear” Amelia Hughes/Tasmain Wichard third.

Day 2 saw racing start in a Westerly Force two building up to a force 3 during the day. The first race saw “Flirting with Danger” Jonathan Moss/Sophie Dingwall lead from the first windward to the end. “Vache Mystique” David/Katrina Brewer were ninth at the final leeward mark. They banged right and finished second just ahead of “Nasty Tern” James Howard/Andrew Liss. David Brewer dominated the next race, crossing the line 61 seconds ahead of “Forty two” Stephen/Chris Videlo who fought hard to fend of James Wade. The last race of the day saw Adam Richards and James Howard break clear. Adam led all the way until the last beat when James passed to take the gun. “Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster” Elliot Parsons/Jenny Lennon were third.

Day 3 saw only one race scheduled as it was Weymouth carnival. This featured the “Red Arrows” performing over the fleet, a spectacle few could forget. David Brewer again dominated the race, but failed to cover up the last beat. “Genesis” Ben Lyon/Robert Moore just pipped him at the line. Third was Andrew Twinn.#

Day 4 saw a Westerly force 4-5. The day saw many capsizes and changes of the lead. It also saw, it should be said, some very impressive sailing from a fleet who’s maximum age is 17. Race one was won by “Pontoon” Chris D’Arcy/Edward Impey from “She who dares” Oliver Impey/James Lambe and Alex Shanahan was third. With the wind picking up the second race saw Alex Shanahan, Elliott Parsons and “Lethal Menace” Guy Brearey/Chris Proffitt draw clear and all lead at different points. Alex took the gun from Elliott and then Guy.

Day 5 and the final race again saw a Westerly force 3-4. David Brewer led from start to finish only to find that he was OCS. With the Championships still in the balance the racing was close. The lead changed frequently up the beats as there was little covering. First was “Bad Influence” Thomas Makey/Claire Dallimore. Jodie Green was second and Alex Shanahan third. This meant that the Dean & Reddyhoff Cadet National Champions were Jodie and Stevie Green. David and Katrina Brewer won the B Fleet.

Being surrounded by hills and mountains has the inevitable effect So far the conditions on Lake Lipno have provided for excellent and challenging sailing, however being surrounded by hills and mountains can mean that the winds are shifty and can be light at time, and this proved to be the case on day 3.
