A cool, light breeze welcomed 10 enterprises to Merthyr Tydfil’s annual open meeting on the 28th September. The water level was noticeably lower than usual but there was still plenty of room on the large reservoir for racing.

The first race was initially led by Russell Bright and Scot Williams of Penarth. Phil Kirk and James Askew of Frampton managed to catch and then pass to take the lead, which they held to the finish. David and Henry Morgan from Bowmoor worked their way up the fleet to come a close third.

Roger Appleby and Rosemary Tomison who were trying out some new sails were the early leaders of the second race closely followed by Phil and James and the Morgans. These places reversed on the first lap but stayed close. Phil and James then took the lead and held it until the finish. Ian Wakeling and Robert Millar from Bristol then had a close battle with Roger and Rosemary to steel third.

The last race started in light winds. The beat became a run and then a beat again keeping the fleet closely bunched. Phil and James then found the wind and led round the first mark and began to pull out a lead. Roger and Rosemary were in hot pursuit followed by Ian and Robert and Russell and Scot. This became the finishing order.

Merthyr Tydfil SC provided good sailing and great food throughout the day and we all look forward to returning next year.
