Etchells Worlds at Greenwich, Connecticut Overall

by Event Website 28 Sep 2003 13:34 BST

It has been said in the sport of yacht racing that the victory goes not necessarily to the swiftest but to the boat that makes the fewest mistakes. When one boat appears the swiftest and makes the fewest mistakes, than the rest of the field is going to be left fighting it out for 2nd and 3rd place. After yesterdays near perfect 12- 20-knot breeze, today’s breeze came in light 6-10 from east-northeast. North, south, east, west, 6 knots 20 knots it didn’t matter to Ken Read who continued his total dominance of this regatta with his 6th win in 8 races. That left him with a 2nd and 6 bullets in this best 7 of 8 races regatta.

This was not to suggest that today’s race was a sail around for Mr. Read. At the starting gun Jud Smith was 45 points out of first and Cameron Miles, 1999 world champion, only 6 points behind that. An OCS or getting buried in the middle of the fleet would have put Ken in third place behind these two who sailed an outstanding regatta in their own rite. By the way, at the start 4,5,6, & 7 were separated by a mere 9 points, 10 points made the difference between 9th and 15th, 10 points separated 16 through 22. These people went pedal to the medal or at least as flat out as you could go in 8 knots of breeze. Interestingly enough all who started in the top 10 remained in the top 10, which is probably why they were there in the first place.

In the final analysis sailing in such a rarefied atmosphere made everyone a winner. We hope that the competitors enjoyed themselves as much as those of us who had the pleasure of organizing and working on this regatta.
