Etchells Worlds at Greenwich, Connecticut - Day 4

by Event Website 25 Sep 2003 08:04 BST

The 2003 MasterCard Etchells Worlds Regatta is truly a world-class event. The list of competitors reads like who’s who in yachting. Such luminaries as Dennis Connor, Dave Curtis, Robbie Doyle, Hans Fogh, Peter Isler and winner of the past two worlds Stuart Childerly are just a few of the true champions that have assembled in Greenwich, Connecticut. With all of this talent on the water it seems almost inconceivable that one individual would totally dominate, but such is the case in Ken Reed, who crossed the finish line in third place in today’s race. After four days and five races he has three bullets, a second and a third. This is still yacht racing and anything can happen in the next three races that are likely to be run on Thursday and Friday, but for the moment at least Ken Reed is the man to beat.

Today’s race was sailed in 6 to 10 knots of breeze mostly from the southwest. These conditions are not unusual on the Long Island Sound after a frontal passage like yesterdays. The sound, as the locals refer to it, is bordered by Long Island to the south and Connecticut to the north. How many times has this sailor found great southwest breeze on the Long Island shore while wind on the Connecticut shore was a drifter? How many times have I sailed to Long Island into a big lift? Not in this regatta folks. Through out the entire five races those who went to the Connecticut shore made out and those who went south to Long Island got clobbered. Trends are friends and you have to wonder if this pattern will continue. Is right, right? The only thing we know for sure about the wind is that it will change. The question is when?
