Club Youth Racing Circuit Meeting at New Quay Yacht Club

by Nick James 24 Aug 2003 12:24 BST 10 August 03

New Quay hosted its second CYRC event on 10 August. A total of 25 competitors turned up for an excellent day of racing in varied conditions ranging from force 1-3. A significant swell and strong tide tested the competitors sea sailing skills to the limit over the 4 races.

In the Optimist fleet, proceedings were dominated by Hededd Brown who won 3 of the 4 races, Alex Kirk doing well to win the first race. Second place was closely contested between Alex and Annie Thomas, Alex eventually prevailing.

In the handicap fleet proceedings were dominated by the Laser Radials and Laura Morgan in her Topaz, sailing single handed. Local sailor Sam James was overall winner and won the Lasers with 3 wins out of 4. Goven Berridge was competitive throughout, winning the last race and was pipped to second overall by the eventual winner of the handicap fleet Laura Morgan on countback. In the Toppers Heidi Smith had a close contest with Andrew Joseph from Mumbles, eventually prevailing. Third topper was Amy Reynolds with local sailor Tom Lloyd 4th. In the local Pico fleet proceedings were dominated by Ben Jones who came a creditable 11th overall.
