Dean & Reddyhoff Cadet Nationals Day 2

by Steve Proffit 21 Aug 2003 11:07 BST

Race 1 on the second day saw the fleet away first time into a Westerly force 2. Left middle was favoured up the first leg with Jonathan Moss rounding first ahead of Thomas Makey and James Howard. There was then a gap before Guy Brearey, Jodie Green, David Brewer and “Art Attack” Robert/Anna Graves rounded. David Brewer had problems getting his spinnaker up and defended his position as hard as possible by luffing. Unfortunately he lost positions to leeward. By the next windward mark Jonathon Moss had established a clear lead. Thomas Makey and James Howard were still very close together with Jodie Green who had moved up a place. These positions were held until the final beat to the line. Jonathon Moss took the gun. David Brewer rounded the Leeward mark in ninth and banged hard left. This paid, and he crossed the line in second. With the leaders failing to cover those behind James Howard was third and Thomas Makey fourth.

Race 2. With the wind freshening to a good force 3 the race was away first time with an individual recall. The race belonged to David Brewer. He had clear air for the whole of the race gaining a maximum lead of 70 seconds at the third windward mark and crossed the finish line 61 seconds ahead of “Forty Two” Stephen/Christopher Videlo. They had held second place at every mark but had to work hard to fend of James Wade who was third. Fourth went to Georgie Blaver Mann who had stormed through the fleet after a poor first beat.

Race 3. The wind strength had now steadied but was oscillating around a westerly. No side was favoured, but as always the boats who sailed the shifts came out on top. Adam Richards led James Howard at the first mark. These two stayed together in that order all the way to the last beat. Up the beat Adam Richards chose not to cover and James Howard crossed the line first just ahead of him. “Pan Galactic Gargle Blaster Elliott Parsons/Jenny Lennon were third having passed Thomas Makey at the second windward mark when Thomas did a turn for hitting the mark. Thomas finished fourth.
