Typhoon Fireball Nationals Overall

by Jonathan Bale 10 Aug 2003 10:27 BST

Guess what? No wind again this morning! At the briefing the race officer was hopeful of getting a sea breeze and said the fleet should launch…he hoped we would get three races in today!

After waiting a while for the sea breeze to kick in (or any sort of breeze for that matter), the fleet started a game of water frisbee. This started out as throwing the frisbee from boat to boat, but soon ended up with crews swimming in the water after the frisbee. Many crews ended up in the wrong boats, with some boats having three people and others left with only one.

An hour of water frisbee later and with still no sign of wind the race officer decided that we were all having far too much fun and signalled the fleet ashore.

It was a brief wait on shore before the sound signal was made and racing was abandoned for the day. First overall and winner of the UK Typhoon Fireball Open Championships were Ireland’s Shane MacCarthy and Andy Thompson. In second place and UK Typhoon Fireball National Champions were Kevin Hope and Rob Gardner of Notts County Sailing Club.

Tonight’s prize giving is to be held at Owlway Mansion, a very grand building and home of the Singer family. As well as the main prizes, thanks to the generous sponsorship from Typhoon, there will be a prise draw of tally number for all of the competitors who are at the prize giving. So every one who is there has an equal chance of wining one of four Typhoon Alpha dry tops or one of four Typhoon Ultra wet suits. After the presentations and speeches a six-piece band will be providing the entertainment into the small hours of the morning.
