Typhoon Fireball Nationals - Day 4

by Jonathan Bale 7 Aug 2003 09:57 BST

Finally, some wind! Much to everyone’s relief the Race Officer announced at 11.00am that racing was on. Admittedly the wind was still light, but there was more than had been seen all week and two races were completed.

Race One, and the race officer elected for line starts. At the windward mark it was World Champion, Vyv Townend, with his new helm Simon Payne who lead around the first mark. They soon built up a lead they would hold until the finish. In second place it was Kevin Hope and Rob Gardner followed by Angus Hemings and Steve Chesney.

Race Two, again line starts. This time it was Grahame Newton and his crew Mark Stevens who were back on form to take the win. Behind Grahame and Mark there was much place changing and at the finish line it was Phil Popple and Doug Shore in second place followed by Irelands Shane MacCarthy and Andy Thompson in third.

Overall Grahame and Mark now lead the event, followed by Shane MacCarthy and Andy Thompson in second with recently crowned European Champion Andy Smith and James Meldrum in third.

After last night’s very successful buddy night and barbecue, at which the bar was drunk dry, it was decided this successful format should be repeated. Having to combine halves of tickets to get a free drink worked really well – all around the bar you could see people talking who’d never exchanged a word before. There’s no barbecue tonight but the buddy drinks continue and are supported by the United Kingdom Fireball Association and The Wychwood Brewery.
