Cadet Worlds in Nieuwpoort, Belgium - Day 1

by Steve Proffitt 4 Aug 2003 09:26 BST

The Cadet World Championships are being held in Nieuwpoort, Belgium from the 2nd of August to the 8th of August. Great Britain have seven boats in the World Championship; Oren Richards and Connie Stock, Adam Richards and Sam Muskett, Jodie and Stevie Green, Andrew Mackay and Jonathon Kimber, Guy Brearey and Christopher Proffitt, Elliott Parsons and Jenny Lennon and James Wade and Katie Barr. There are 72 boats taking part from 12 countries.

Day one saw the first race sailed in a shifty force 1. With two recalls the black flag got the fleet away. Guy Brearey and a Russian Boat had port end flyers and tacked across the fleet to lead at the first mark. The rest of the team were all well up the fleet. The race was shortened before the final beat leaving a downwind finish. Guy finished second, Elliott fourth, Adam seventh. Andrew used terrific downwind speed to pull back to ninth. All the team finished in the top 30.

There was a delay to allow the sea breeze to fill in. The second race was then sailed in a force 3, after one recall. With some very close racing all the team finished in the top half, with Jodie seventh and James eight. This meant that all the team are in the top twenty overnight, with James best placed in sixth.

There is also a Promotional Regatta taking part alongside the Worlds, on a parallel course. Great Britain have a fantastic turnout of 48 boats from a fleet of 77.

Race one saw Ben Stone and James Eminson take the gun from Will and James Rusden. Christopher Bailey and Joanna Freeman were third just piping David and Katrina Brewer.

Race two was dominated by Jonathan Moss and Sophie Dingwall, who took off from the start and sprinted away. Second was Victoria Cooper and Adam Hopwood, with Thomas Makey and Clare Dallimore third.

After two races Great Britain boats hold the first nineteen places, with Thomas Makey and Claire Dallimore leading.
