Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race 2003 - Gdynia to Turku

by Sophie Lloyd 30 Jul 2003 11:15 BST

The fleet of International Tall Ships’ has once again arrived in Turku (31st July – 3rd August). The vessels participating in this world famous maritime event have enjoyed a great race from Gdynia, Poland and will be looking forward to the warm welcome of Turku.

The festivities and entertainment arranged for the 2500 young crew members in Turku will play a key role in bringing together different nations, cultures and languages.

The programme of events in Turku includes a number of exciting activities for crews and the local community alike. From dance, art and theatre to competitions, parades and parties, there is something for everyone.

’Turku was a very successful host port when the Tall Ships’ Race was last here in 1996 and I am sure it will be again this time. The city has put together a first class project team to manage the event here.

The fleet had very favourable winds in the race from Gdynia and crossed the finish line a few days ago. Most the sailed in the archipelago so the young crews will be coming into Turku feeling relaxed and ready to enjoy the warm Finish hospitality for which Turku is renowned. But we want the event to be a success for the local community as well as for the fleet and the young trainees. There will be a very festive atmosphere around where the ships are berthed so there will be plenty to see and do to attract the crowds.’

Nigel Rowe (Chairman, Sail Training International)

There will be 95 vessels participating in the event at Turku. 14 of these are the large, Class A vessels and 11 are state owned or Navy ships. All vessels will be cruising in company to Riga, Latvia before starting the second race to Luebeck and Travemunde.

‘It’s great to be back in Turku after 7 years. The fleet had a fantastic time in 1996 and I know that the hospitality shown by the citizens of Turku will guarantee this years’ fleet will be well looked after.’

Peter Newell (Race Director for Sail Training International)
