Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race at Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club

by Gordon Lester 28 Jul 2003 21:53 BST 27th August 2003

The annual Anglesey Offshore Dinghy Race sponsored by Dickies of Bangor and Robinsons Breweries was sailed under the burgee of Red Wharf Bay Sailing Club on Sunday 27th August. There was a good breeze, never below a 3 with gust up to a 5. A total of 76 boats sailed from Beaumaris to the picturesque setting of Traeth Bychan where RWBSC have their clubhouse.

The 20 strong catamaran fleet started first at 11.00 followed by 56 monohulls 15 minutes later. The running start enabled the monos to grace the already beautiful scenery with a fine show of many coloured kites. The passage through Puffin Sound was a close fetch with some large swells which tested the sailor’s abilities to keep up the boat speed. There was then an interesting beat into the Quarry Mark and then into Benlechh. The next leg was an exciting reach to Moelfre which enabled the spinnaker boats a chance to show off their kites again.

The cats sailed the extended course across Red Wharf Bay. The sun had come up by this time and conditions were perfect and en excellent day’s sailing was had by all. RWBSC would like to thank their sponsors (Dickies of Bangor and Robinson’s Breweries) and look forward to welcoming everyone back for next year’s race.
