Enterprise Open at Weir Wood Sailing Club
by Geoffrey Bush 21 Jul 2003 12:00 BST
10 visitors joined 10 home boats for a record turnout (at least since the 1980s) for this Southern Area Blue Jib meeting. Shifty force 3 to 4 winds tested all the competitors except Nigel and Andy Bird who won both morning races. The battle for second place was hotly contested by a group that
included Martin Barrett and Jennifer Cragg (who had travelled from Yorkshire for the event), Peter and Sarah Belcher from Wilsonian SC, Neil Parsloe and Siobham Ladyman from Broadwater SC, Alan and Chris Beaney from Corinthian SC, and Steve and Kathy Collins from Minima SC.
After lunch a stronger wind saw a number of involuntary swims. Bird got well away from the pack in the third race and with the event safely in the bag was able to turn the helm over to his wife for the last race which was closely fought with Alan Beaney and finally won by him. First prize was a
watercolour of Bird’s red boat leading the fleet, painted by Weir Wood’s very own artist, John Chisnall who had himself competed!
