The weekend of May 31st and June 1st provided great summer weather for relaxing and BBQ’s. This also happened to be the weekend that Lakeside Leisure hosted their annual Kestrel Open. Both days were warm, with light breezes only, some areas of the lake sheltered by the surrounding bushes.

Race one. Paul Jarvey & Kate Hearsum got an early break and sailed away from the fighting pack behind. Dusty Miller & John Ellingham held off Ernie Miller & Liam Pike to finish in that order. Dave Hearsum and Duncan Wilson were fourth.

Race two. Paul & Kate made another early break keeping a sufficient gap to have a stress free race. Ernie & Liam this time grabbed second from Dusty & John. Dave & Duncan again fourth.

Saturday evening was surprisingly and pleasantly insect free as we had a BBQ by the water, this year the fleet decided not to take up John & Lisa’s offer of water games.

Sunday morning showed little promise of stronger winds, with Paul & Kate leading, but any of the first three boats could win.

Race three, Paul & Kate managed to gain the lead on the first lap, but with a different race officer and a need to go through the line each lap, they threw away the lead by forgetting this. Dusty & John sailed on to win. Ernie & Liam second and Dave & Duncan held third as Paul & Kate recovered to fourth.

Race four, and the decider. Paul & Kate found the windward mark first, as they bore away round the third mark, Paul & Kate ran out of wind, Dusty & John, along with Ernie & Liam gybed and found wind in the middle of the lake. These two boats pulled away for a couple of laps. Paul & Kate reeled in Ernie and gained an overlap to pass and chase Dusty. Paul & Kate, perhaps lucky with the shifts, passed Dusty & John on the beat. They then sailed below Paul & Kate on the same leg they gained the lead on lap one. Paul & Kate managed to pass again on the beat next time round to take the race and the open. Dusty & John were second overall. Ernie & Liam did not get a finish for missing the gate on lap one, but had done enough to be third overall.
