Hoya Round the Island Race Overall

CHRISTIE POWERS HOYA 60 INTO MONOHULL LEAD FOR OBSERVER TROPHY

Linford Christie OBE, Olympic Gold medallist and European Champion, was crewing on board Hoya 60, the 1999 winner of the Observer Trophy awarded to the first monohull to cross the line in the 63rd Hoya Round the Island Race. Skippered by international yachtsman Eddie Warden Owen, Hoya 60 led the monohulls from the start gaining over half a mile lead from the rest of its class during the course of the race.

The overall winner of the race and receiver of the coveted Gold Roman Bowl was one of the smallest boats in her class, the IRC Class 12 Folk boat, Celia Mary. Built in 1955 and owned and skippered by Edward Donald, she completed the race in a time of 11 hours, 16 minutes and 11 seconds.

The Hoya Round the Island Race powered off to a spinnaker start off the Royal Yacht Squadron line at 8.30am on Saturday morning with over 1,500 boats of every size and description packed into a sun drenched Solent. A feast of multi-coloured hulls and sails added to the spectacle. As the fleet rounded the Needles the wind dropped from an initial 17 knots to 13.5 knots, which slowed the boats up although a south southeasterly breeze eventually picked up which allowed competitors a fast finish. This year 1,221 boats actually completed the course, the greatest number of boats to finish in the history of the race.

Current record holder, the renamed Trimaran ‘Sportsbank Quadrant Business Centres’ was the first boat to cross the line and first in the multihull class to take the Freedom Challenge Bowl. Formerly called ‘Paragon’, she set the race course record in 1986 with Mike Whipp and Rodney Patterson on board, in a time of 3 hours, 55 minutes and 28 seconds. At a distance of 50 nautical miles, the Hoya Round the Island Race is the largest and most popular yacht race of its type in the world attracting 1,508 entries this year and over 10,000 participants.
