Bird Island Race 2 Blue Water series

by News Editor on 15 Oct 2000

The second race in the CYCA Blue Water series started in miserable conditions on Friday night. The 85.4 mile Bird Island, truly the Bird Islet race, because it is indeed a small island, saw the three major Blue Water series rivals from the last two seasons on the water. But the boats were different, instead of Atara, Roger Hickman was behind the wheel of Kevan Pearce's classic ocean racer Ausmaid.

Ausmaid had a great battle with Syd Fischer's 50 Ragamuffin emerging from the morning gloom to finish only 10 minutes behind the evergreen ocean racer.

Brindabella who had finished at 6.30am, came in third on handicap. After a slow start to the season Brinda's is beginning to wind up. It will surely again be the fastest non water ballasted boat in this years Sydney to Hobart race.

These three boats have gapped the Blue Water field.

Colin Boyles Kingtide and Scott Wheelhouse Bash 41 Sea Jay were next on IMS handicap.
