BT Challenge / Team VERITAS News - 13/10/00

by Babs Day on 13 Oct 2000
Team VERITAS, skippered by Will Carnegie, who finished fifth in the first leg of the BT Global Challenge, are raring to better this position in the second leg from Boston to Buenos Aires which starts on Sunday 15th October at 12 noon.

The weather conditions from Boston to Buenos Aires will be possibly the most changeable the crews will experience in the race, as they will encounter a variety of currents and wind bands both sides of the equator, and temperatures ranging from 10 to 40 degrees centigrade. Tactical planning will also take into consideration the best route to tackle the infamous doldrums.

Team VERITAS, who vowed before the start of the race to take every moment seriously, even if they are floating in a windless sea, are ready to cope with the vagaries of the weather. Skipper Will Carnegie commented:

"At the start of each leg we are setting sail with a clean canvas. We mentally pencil in the lines of our course in advance, which is very important in our overall strategy. In reality, our tactics have to be flexible depending on weather changes.

We expect that this leg will be hot and sunny, and yet this is going to be one of the most challenging legs of the whole race. There will be more changes in weather conditions during this leg than in the other five legs put together... from 10C to 40C and from hurricanes to the doldrums."
