Shake-A-Leg Newport Millennium Regatta - Review
by Steve Anderson on 21 Aug 2000
Skipper Nick Bryon-Brown (Mattapoisett, Mass.) and crew Annette Bourbonnierre (Newport, R.I.) dominated the fleet with six first place finishes for a total of 4.5 points over two days at the Millennium Regatta. The regatta, hosted by Shake-A-Leg Newport, was tailored for sailors with disabilities and took place on Narragansett Bay Saturday, August 19 and Sunday, August 20. Races were contested in 20-foot Freedom Independence sailboats that have been modified with specially designed seat that swivel.
"Nick and Annette really did a great job," said event coordinator Steve Anderson. "They successfully sailed against some very skilled competitors." Nine teams - each comprised of two disabled sailors and one able bodied sailor - vied for top honors at this year's event. Trophies were awarded to the top four finishers at an awards ceremony on Sunday at Fort Adams.
Shake-A-Leg Newport is a non-profit organization devoted to post-trauma rehabilitation and progressive activities for people with spinal cord injuries. With its various rehabilitation programs held at Newport's Salve Regina University, the organization also utilizes the Sail Newport Sailing Center at Fort Adams to bring its adaptive sailing program to hundreds of children and adults each summer.
The top four teams were as follows:
1. Nick Bryon-Brown (Mattapoisett, Mass.) / Annette Bourbonnierre (Newport, R.I.), 4.5 points
2. Craig Wilson (Oakham, Mass.) / Tim Flynn (Ashaway, R.I.), 9.5 points
3. Joe Guay (Barrington, R.I../ Donna Demarest (Waterbury, Conn.), 11.5 points
4. Peter Benson (Bedford, N.H.) / Matt Sullivan (Coventry, R.I.), 14.75 point
