Vendee Globe French victory

by News Editor on 11 Feb 2001
The French have gone crazy this evening as one of their favourite sons Michel Desjoyeaux (PRB) slide across the finish line in Les Sables d'Olonne, France at 20:08:32 local time surrounded by hundreds of media and spectator boats and a huge firework display illuminating the evening gloom..

The French sailor has won the Vendee Globe single-handed, non-stop, around the world yacht race, beating the previous record of 105 days by more than ten days.

The 24 year old British sailor, Ellen MacArthur, safely in second place is nursing her weary yacht Kingfisher towards Les Sables d'Olonne and is expected to finish tomorrow night.
