Team Adventure requested turned down by competitors

by Barry Pickthall on 26 Jan 2001
Tony Bullimore and other skippers in THE RACE received a request from Cam
Lewis, the American skipper of Team Adventure today, asking for their
agreement for him to replace the crew that have left his boat. Team
Adventure is currently in Cape Town undergoing repairs to her forward beam.

The race rules specifically exclude any change of the crew after the start,
and while the TEAM LEGATO skipper sympathises with his rival, Tony sees no
reason to make any exceptions in this case.

“It’s unfortunate that two of Cam’s crew were injured when they came to a
crash stop a week ago, and I’m sorry that two others have chosen to leave
Team Adventure since their arrival in Cape Town. But the fact remains they
still have ten crew- the same as Team Legato. Perhaps they won’t be quite so
efficient, but their number is adequate to race the boat safely.
