Mike Golding - report 74 from Vendee Globe

by Mike Golding on 30 Jan 2001
After a slight hiccup yesterday Mike Golding, on board Team Group 4, was
firmly back up in 8th spot in the Vendée Globe fleet today.

This time he plans to stay ahead of fellow Brit Josh Hall and now the hunt
is on for Catherine Chabaud aboard Whirlpool in 7th place. Golding is
currently sailing at about 8 knots downwind, on a starboard gybe, in what
he described as 'fickle breezes' - not too light but shifting about all
over the place and demanding to sail efficiently.

Golding is sailing straight at the finish line while Chabaud is further to
the North West, and perpendicular to the line, so Golding is well placed to
be cutting the corner to catch her. We should start to see his distance to
Chabaud diminish quite noticeably during the next 24 to 36 hours.
