A Nationals is about far more than sailing - I bet the Olympic sailors would be terrible at the drinking, being so out of practice, and probably not too good at sleeping under boat covers, having forgotten at 2.00am where they are staying. All good Nationals skills...

I'm not sure rabble is a word I'd associate with the Merlin class.
Like some other things - sailing is more enjoyable when you do it with someone else

As a former Merlin Rocket sailor myself, I'm confident that any current Merlin sailor is sufficiently proficient in written English to correctly interpret the self-deprecating phrase "us rabble" within the context that it was written.
