My thoughts are with youth sailor Tess Lloyd and her family following her accident this week. She's clearly receiving fantastic care, but this does beg the question of who foots the bill for the care when accidents like this happen abroad.
I tried looking into this when racing in Oz a couple of years ago and decided that I'd have to 'wing it' as things are far from clear. Normal travel insurance has some level of cover when "boating" abroad, but I don't think that this extends to racing your own dinghy. I believe that there are also limits on distances from the shore etc. Normal boat insurance may cover third party injuries but wouldn't cover me hurting myself. As I'm heading out to Florida later this year for the Contender World Championships, it would be nice to get something properly sorted out.
What do others do?  Can someone from the insurance world give any guidance?

I sailed a championships in the US a couple of years ago and had similar concerns.  However there are quite a few companies that offer sports activities covers and of these many offer cover while racing (but not all).
I used
for the US (recommended by Noble marine http://www.noblemarine.co.uk/travelinsurance.php3 )

I have also had a Ski Club of policy for European cover.

I know of several international race officers who have joined the French Sailing Federation as this enables them to get cheap cover for all sailing activities (including driving jury boats) worldwide.

This may be the cheapest solution  - vive l'Europe

Noble Marine don't offer Travel Insurance, but we have always pointed our clients towards Sportscover Direct

Their policy does cover injury sustained while sailing offshore and also while dinghy racing.

Does it cover race officials driving motor boats in the course of their official duties?
