the 300 is a nice boat so go for it!!  if you dont like it just sell it agen and move on!!

RS300's are certainly more fun than a Laser, they reward good sailing but they are a bit unstable and can bite back very hard if you do get it wrong, and I found it a bit uncomfortable hiking upwind with the narrow decks.

Have you thought about an RS600? Lots of boat for the money and more stable than a 300, plus no more painful beats, just lay back and enjoy it!

Both boats can be tricky to tack, but for different reasons.

The 300 has a soft sail with only one full width batten, which means as you come out of the tack the leech powers up first which then screws you back into the wind, plus it's a long walk from one side to the other.

The 600's fully battened sail means you don't get this effect but you do have to cope with the mechanics of getting in off the wire, and out the other side. The good thing is it can be done as slowly as you like - come off the wire, kicker off, tack like a laser, sort your self out on the new side then when you are ready, go back on the wire. This can then be speeded up with confidence until you can do flying wire-to-wire's with full kicker on!

Both the 300 and the 600 both take time to get used to, as I guide I was a top-ten Laser Ladder sailor, I bought a 300 and it took a couple of months to get it round the course, and about six months before I could race it effectively. After a year I was winning opens.

When I bought the 600 I could nurse it round the course, but again it was a good six months before I was up to a respectable racing standard.

If you are prepared to work at it, either boat is achievable. If you can sail a Laser in big winds you should be fine in either boat. Most of both 300 and 600 fleets are made up of bored ex-Laser sailors!
